Art work and empty property

We are currently dealing with a derelict property that is subject to a boarding up notice.  It is located in the centre of one of the main regeneration areas and while we seek to undertake long term enforcement action to bring the property back into use, we are keen to minimise the impact of the "eye sore" in the interim period.

One idea is to use artwork to decorate the boarding.

Given current relations with the owners I suspect they will not interested in a voluntary art scheme and it is likely that the building will be boarded by the Council through work in default.

I would be keen to hear of any schemes that have successfully used art work on the boarding of derelict properties, especially if the building has been boarded following work in default by the Council.

Many thanks

Nicola Daniel

Art work and Empty properties

Hi Nicola

In Newcastle we ran a sucessful Decorated Board Scheme, we put the boards on properties where the owners were working in partnership with the council to bring them back into use. I can email you some of the pictures of the boards and the consent forms we used.

Art work on empty buildings

Our Environmental Improvement Team have been doing this for a while.

I kind of have mixed feelings about it for empty residential properties - easier to serve a S215 if it looks worse - but there are definitely some long term properties where it's needed and obviously after works in default there will be other moves afoot to get it back into use anyway!   Ours have tended to be on long term commercial props.  The person organising it was our EI Manager matt.easteal@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

All the best

Emma
