Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I have done a search and can't find what I want. I have been asked about PRODs by one of the Welsh Officers and the query is do they apply to properties owned by colleges?

Hi Fiona,
I may be a bit dense, but I am not sure I understand the question.
A PROD can be made by any member of the public, to request the relevant Government office, and this is now the Midlands office for ALL Prods by the way, to order the disposal of any "Government owned" vacant building.
This would include any local authority owned property, or other Govenrmnet department.
It would have to be done as a member of the public.
I have done a few in this way, it's quite good fun, and the chap in the midlands Gov ofice was pleased to have something to do!
Hope this helps? but probably not

Hi Fiona
Building on Paul's comment
Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980
All members of the public have the power to make a public request ordering disposal (PROD)? Section 93 -100
A method of putting pressure on public authorities to maximise use of their empty property.
It gives members of the public power to request disposal and challenge the relevant public authority to say what they are going to do with their property and if they can’t come up with a good reason to then dispose of it and make sure that it is put back into use
Schedule 16 of the Act excluded properties owned by the NHS and the MoD:
Below is a list of public landowners that are covered by this legislation:
Government Bodies, Local & Regional Authorities
Other departments owning Crown land
The Commission for the New Towns and the Housing Corporation
The British Coal Corporation, Civil Aviation Authority, and the Post Office
British Broadcasting Corporation and Independent Broadcasting Authority
Police Authority
British Waterways Board and National Rivers Authority.
British Rail, London Regional Transport, and Passenger Transport Executives
British shipbuilders
Statutory undertakers
So unless the Colleges are owned by any of the above bodies, then you would not be able to use the PROD.

It's probably the way I worded the question....what I mean is can a member of the public request a PROD for a building owned by a college?
But I think you have answered my question (the Government bit), or maybe not..it is Friday after all!
