Publishing lists of empty properties

As a new Empty Properties team, we want to consider making public the list of empty properties, subject to Data Protection approvals.

We have over 4,500 6 month plus empty properties and wondered if any authorities had done this and what experiences anyone has had.

Have there been increased incidents of squatters?
Has crime increased in the empty properties?
Has the list been a useful tool for companies that wish to buy empty properties to get them back into use?
Has the list helped decrease the number of empty properties?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My contact number is 0151 691 8691.

Thanks,
Steve Eaves

Valid Concerns

These are valid conserns and we have come across cases that give an indication of companies that will try to use the list to locate the owners to aquire the emties

if you have any long term empties we might be able to help

But why is it a problem?

Hi Tom

I wondered why you thought that firms trying to buy up empties was a problem. Those in favour of releasing lists (not me) would say that is exactly why such lists should be released. Do these firms apply inappropriate pressure to vulnerable people or is there some other negative aspect?

releasing lists

releasing lists of properties would create a deluge of callers to the properties, some legimate some not, releaseing lists to respected well established approved companies would be an option and should be strictly controlled
