Action on Empty Homes Newsletter 30 October 2018

Welcome to our latest newsletter - as you'll see we have relaunched with a new name and renewed focus!

A new name designed to 'do what it says on the tin', to drive action
We believe that every empty home requires action but we understand that different problems need different solutions and that was why we chose to re-launch at the Empty Homes Network Conference where we can learn from the local authority officers on the front line. The Conference was a successful highlight of this year's very active National Empty Homes Week.
To see some of the great action by over 60 of the many councils taking part in National Empty Homes Week 2018 see a summary on our new Action on Empty Homes website here

Media highlight local action, call for investment and debate new powers
Campaign Manager Chris Bailey started his Empty Homes Week with a live interview with BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester about the blight created by long-term empties. Another interview with Hull radio station Viking FM, addressed the national and local picture, highlighting good work by Hull City Council and by Giroscope a partner in our research project demonstrating how it can be done.

Chris also appeared on London talk radio station LBC to discuss an 'easy EDMO' proposal to simplify Empty Dwelling Management Orders to help officers turn more long-term empty homes around quicker.

First-time buyer survey calls for Budget action on empty homes
Research from Aldermore, a specialist bank, revealed the measures prospective first-time buyers want in place to support them reaching the housing ladder. The highest response from the representative survey was that over a third (34%) of those looking to buy their first home want the government to introduce policies to reduce the number of empty homes across the UK.

These remarkable results highlight the level of public dissatisfaction with current Government housing policies, which still leave so many locked out of so many housing options. See the Aldermore research here
