£100million: a national empty homes strategy in the making?

We have learned that the Department of Communities and Local Government is preparing to launch a document setting out the government's strategy for empty homes. This will cover the New Homes Bonus, the role of enforcement as well as providing some high level funding criteria for the £100m included in the HCA’s Affordable Homes Programme.

It was trailed by CLG at a round-table meeting also attended by the HCA and the GLA that had been called by London's regional empty property co-ordinators to discuss the £100million.

Home Again Conference shows the way

The Home Again Empty Homes Conference in London on Monday 23rd May, jointly organised by ourselves and the charity Empty Homes, lived up to expectations as the most substantial empty homes conference yet held.

People from across the spectrum of public, not-for-profit and private sectors were given insights into a wide range of innovative approaches by speakers who, in turn, came from all sectors of the empty homes world.

HCA Temporary Empty Homes product - EHN submits its questions

Having reviewed the Temporary Empty Homes product developed by the Homes and Communities Agency as the successor to Temporary Social Housing Grant, the EHN has now written to the HCA asking for clarification on some issues. The letter can be downloaded from our library from here.

Amongst other things we've raised questions about the rent levels, particularly in relation to homelessness accommodation, and about how the product would work with EDMOs. We've also raised concerns about the lease length of 5 years.

HCA announces Temporary Empty Homes funding package

The HCA has now announced the successor scheme to Temporary Social Housing Grant, for homes leased by Registered Providers for up to 30 years. This will be of great importance to short-life housing organisations, councils and housing associations who are involved in leasing properties.
